The World Information Society Day (previously
known as World Telecommunication Day), which was held for
the first time in 1969, is held each year on 17 May to commemorate
the founding of the ITU in 1865. Each year, different countries
or cities carry out various activities to celebrate this Day.
From 2006, the World Telecommunication Day was renamed as
World Information Society Day to help raise awareness, on
an annual basis, on the enormous possibilities that Information
and Communication Technologies ( ICTs) can bring to all economies
and societies and explore ways to bridge the digital divide.
The digital revolution has opened new opportunities to attain
higher levels of development. These new technologies are powerful
instruments in increasing productivity, generating economic
growth and employment, and improving the living standards
for all. We desperately need more young generation to join
the ICT industry to carry on further developments.
This year, Communications Association of Hong Kong (CAHK)
and the Office of Mr. Sin Chung Kai, Legislative Councillor
(IT), join hands to celebrate the World Information Society
Day in Hong Kong . One of the main objectives is to enable
the secondary and tertiary students to experience the power
of ICT and know more about the industry for their future career
development.
We will arrange telecom tour with career
talk, "Harmony in Motion" Scholastic SMS/MMS Composition
Competition, and CAHK Trophy in the coming months. Prizes
presentation to winners will be conducted at a launching ceremony
on the World Information Society Day official date (i.e. 17
May 2007 ).
